Virus Removal Pointers

Create a Restore Point

Removing malware can be risky. Before beginning virus removal, be aware: Things can go south real fast if you are not careful, and sometimes even when you are. Some viruses are booby-trapped such Virus Removal that they damage the operating system when they are removed. Even if they are not designed that way, their very nature of imbedding themselves into your operating system makes removing them inherently dicey. Things can go south real fast. In order to protect yourself as much as possible it is essential that you create a system restore point before you begin. That way if things go bad you have a better chance of restoring the computer to the condition it was in before you started.

In Windows 7 – Click Start / Right-Click Computer / Click Properties / Click System Protection / Click Create / Enter a name of your choice / Click Create.

In Windows 10 – In the “Search Windows” bar in the bottom left of the screen, type Create a Restore Point / Hit Enter / Click Create / Enter a name of your chcoice / Click Create.

Boot to Safe Mode with Networking

Sometimes it is better to do virus removal while the computer is in safe mode. This prevents the virus from interfering with what you are doing and makes the cleanup much easier and faster.

In Windows 7 – Turn off computer / Boot Computer and immediately begin tapping F8 key rapidly and continuously / Follow prompts and select Safe Mode with Networking. If this procedure does not work, use the Windows 10 procedure below.

In Windows 10 – In the “Search Windows” bar in the bottom left of the screen, type msconfig and press enter / Select the Boot tab / Check the Safe Boot box / Select Network / Click OK / Click Restart. Note: After cleanup is done (after you have rebooted) then repeat this step and uncheck Safe boot and then restart. The computer will start up to normal mode.

Use Several Scanners for Virus Removal

Typically, not any one scanner will get all the bugs. Use at least two or three different programs to clean the computer. A standard antivirus scan is good for virus removal but it will usually not get non-virus malware, such as adware and spyware.

Watch out for Virus Removal Snake Oil

Don’t download cleaning or tune-up programs that you find in an online search. For every good program, there are ten others that are nothing but snake oil. They won’t help and will only kludge up your machine. Use only reputable scanners such as Malwarebytes, Emsisoft, ADWCleaner, Kaspersky, Dr. Web Cure It, etc.

Only One Antivirus

Do not install more than one antivirus program. You can have as many scanners as you want, but only one antivirus should be running active protection. More than one and the performance and stability of your computer will be severely inhibited. If you don’t know the difference between a scanner and an active antivirus then you probably need to consult with someone to help you. An antivirus program is a necessary evil. Your computer would run best without any antivirus program installed. However, given the abundance of malware on the Internet you have to have one installed. Just one will slow down your computer, and a badly coded antivirus may cause severe problems. Running two of them is asking for trouble.

Look Before You Leap

Gather some information about your computer before you start. The FreeScan Program on this site will give you a heads up on how many malware infections you have, what they are, and information about other potential problems. You can download that free program from our site HERE.

Getting Help with Virus Removal

For some people, virus removal on their PC is a bit over their skill level. For others, they simply don’t want the risk and hassle. In these cases, seeking professional assistance is an option. There are two choices in that regard. You can unhook your computer, haul it down to a computer store and leave it for a few days, then go back and get it, bring it back home and hook it all up again and hope they did a good job. Unfortunately, many of the large company stores that do this maintain profitability by hiring young technicians that are still learning. You get to be the Ginny Pig.

Or…there is remote support. Many companies offer this service. They connect remotely to your computer over the Internet and remove the viruses and fix the problems while the computer stays in your home. Not only is this cheaper for you, it is a lot less hassle. The only downside to this approach is finding a reputable company, as many companies that do this are located outside the U.S and they are crooks who are willing to tell any lie to get you to part with more money than is necessary.
