How To Use This Page

My apologies for how this page looks. It is an import of many years of my notes made in Microsoft OneNote and this is the best it can be done without retyping everything.
To search this page for a solution to a particular problem do this:

Control-F will let you search the page for a phrase. For example doing a Control-F and then typing “Recycle Bin Missing” and then hitting Enter will take you to any places in the document that have that text.

To get a command prompt:

CTRL-ALT-DELETE for Task Manager.
Then click on File in the upper left.
Hold CTRL and click New Task (Run).

Enter REGEDIT.EXE in the black box that pops up, you don't need to go to the next line or anything.
Press Enter.
Now, you should have successfully opened up Regedit! (I was unable to through any normal means because it was an executable)

On the left, there should be a folder named HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Click on that.
Scroll down until you find the .exe folder.
Click on that, and look in the right panel. The first item on the list for me was the problem. This was the (Default) file, and under Data on the right, it said secfile. This is why no executables were working!
Now you right click on (Default), and press Modify.
Under Value Data, change it from whatever it is, (mine was secfile), to exefile.
Press Ok.

HOPEFULLY now your computer is back!! Run any antivirus programs now, or whatever you want to do. Hope this helps!

To restore all xp file associations, you can use the ftp connect procedure and then download: xp_fileassoc.bat and run that.

if it displays instead of downloading, just copy it into notepad and save it as a reg file and then run it.

Then reboot the PC. All fixed.

If the value was found, it will be toggled to its opposite state and you will be informed that you need to log off/back on or restart your computer. One note. This change is made in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. Disabling the tools takes effect immediately. Enabling requires a restart. This script can be viewed in Notepad or any text editor, as to the specific Registry key and value that are updated. Your antivirus software may report this script as potentially malicious, or a possible virus. This is because the script writes to the System Registry.

System Restore from Recovery Console

Sometimes I screwed up my machine so bad, that i couldnt boot into windows anymore, not even safe mode. So i looked around for ages and eventually found out how to do it in the recovery console. For anyone who is new to windows, the recovery console can be found by booting up your machine with the XP CD in the drive, and booting off of that CD. Then it will ask you if you want to go to the recovery console, and select that option. The recovery console is basically a MS DOS command prompt, with a little more functionality.

When you get to the recovery console follow these instructions.

    * Type CD\ then Enter
    * Then cd system~1\_resto~1 then Enter
    * Type dir then Enter

When you hit enter it will list all the restore points folders like rp1, rp2 …….. If the restore points have more than one page then u have to keep on hitting the <Enter> key to view the last restore point folder. You will have to choose the second to last option folder

    * Type cd rp {the second to the last restore point no. } (Note: Example: cd rp9, if rp9 is the second to the last restore point where the last restore point no. is 10
    * Then type cd snapshot

Now the command prompt will look like this c:\system~1\_resto~1\rp9\snapshot

    * Type: copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system
    * Press enter
    * Then type: copy _registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software

Then type exit

If you get an access denied error when doing the above, then do the following at the recovery console:

Type CD\ then press Enter
Type cd windows\system32\config then press Enter
Type ren system system.bak then press Enter
Type ren system system.bak then press Enter
Type exist press Enter

Your PC will reboot, go back into the Recovery Console and then you have access

If you still cannot get access in anyway to your installation in the recovery console then your SAM database files are corrupt. There is no way you can restore these with the recovery console. You may need to do a fresh install

Windows Installer Service could not be accessed

Method 1: Unregister and re-register the Windows Installer

   1. Click Start, click Run, type MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs.
   2. Click Start, click Run, type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs, or you may briefly see an hourglass. After you run this command, the operation is complete.
   3. Try your Windows Installer-based application again.

If that does not work, then…

For all those unfortunate souls searching and Googling for how to repair the
Windows Installer Service, I have some info for you. A couple days ago I
tried to uninstall one of my apps and stalled on an error "Windows Installer
Service cannot be accessed". After many trials and errors trying to fix this
issue, I stumbled upon a new fix for this issue that has worked in all these
situations where the Windows Installer Service will not manually start and in
essence, not allow install or uninstall tasks to complete.

Here's the easy steps:
1. Go to a Windows Vista (Any Version) computer that has the Windows
Installer service running correctly and run regedit(Start-Run-Regedit)
2. Go to the location
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msiserver
3. Right click on this key and select "Export" and save the key to a Flash
Drive or other.
4. Run sfc /scannow on the damaged Vista computer - you won't need the
install disk as it goes to backup files on your HD. Do not reboot when
complete
5. Double click saved .reg file from working machine and import registry
settings into damaged Vista computer.
6. Now reboot and try to install/uninstall

NOTE: Using a Windows 7 registry export will fix a Vista machine.

XP Logs out after Login

Boot to the Windows XP CD (RAID systems will need the RAID driver floppy during the bootup - hit the F6 key when directed in the bottom message).

Enter the Recovery Console by choosing 'R' at the Welcome to Setup screen.

Choose the OS shown (1) and hit enter.

Hit enter for a blank password if asked for one. If this isn't accepted, make sure that the user is using the correct XP CD (using a PRO version CD for a HOME version install or visa versa will result in a password rejection. If the user has upgraded to PRO over a HOME edition, try booting the HOME CD). If the CD is correct, and the user can't produce the correct Administrator password, then a clean reinstall of the OS (with full data loss) becomes the final answer.

Assuming the user now sees a command prompt, type "CD %systemroot%\system32" (without quotes) and hit ENTER. Normally the %systemroot% default is "c:\windows\" but this depends on if the system defaults were kept or changed during OS installation, of course.

Type "COPY USERINIT.exe WSAUPDATER.EXE" (again, without quotes) and hit ENTER. This makes a copy of "userinit.exe" and simultaneously names the new copy "wsaupdater.exe".

NOTE: If userinit.exe does not exist, get it from an XP CD. It is in the I386 directory as userinit.ex_ To expand it do: expand userinit.ex_ userinit.exe Then put that file in c:\windows\system32. Then you are fixed.

Type "EXIT" and ENTER. Remove the XP CD while the system is restarting.

The user should now be able to log in normally... but there is one more thing that needs to be done or the issue will repeat itself when the user runs his anti-spyware program again.

Once logged into an administrator account, click the START button.

Choose RUN from the Start Menu.

Enter "REGEDT32" in the OPEN window (notice there is no "i" in edit) and click OK.
Enter "REGEDT32" in the OPEN window (notice there is no "i" in edit) and click OK.

By clicking on the + signs next to each branch, click through the tree in the left pane until you get to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENTVERSION\WINLOGON

Click on the WINLOGON folder in the left pane tree, so that it is highlighted.

Look for "UserInit" in the right pane. It should have a value of "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe," (yes, there is a comma at the end of the value). Double-click on "UserInit" and carefully change its value to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,". Click OK.

Close the Registry Editor. Reboot. Fix is complete. Anti-spyware programs will probably identify and remove "wsaupdater.exe"

XP Printing to Win 7

Procedure to get XP to print to a Windows 7 shared printer.

1. Share the Printer on Windows 7 and in properties set it to allow x86 printing
2. Create users on the Windows 7 machine with the same username and password as the XP machines
3. Remove Mcafee Security Center if installed.
4. On XP machine download the XP printer driver.
5. (If you tried previously to install the printer it will have a Win7 driver installed, so go to

c:\windows\system32\spool and delete the printer driver. If its locked, use FileAssasin)
6. Put a script in all users startup that does this:
net use * /del /y
net use lpt1 \\lyndon-pc\HPOfficeJet /user:lyndon mumm-rubber /PERSISTENT:YES

(be sure its not a wireless connection or it may run before network active)
7. Then install a local printer to lpt1. Use "Have Disk" and use the driver you downloaded.
8. Reboot and test.
9. If putting the batch file in startup folder didn't work, then do this:
Using Regedit...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Right-click an empty spot on the right side of RegEdit and select "New" then
"String Value". Enter any word you want to describe the startup program and
press "Enter". Now right-click the value you just created and select "Modify"
to add Data. Enter the path to the programs executable. Use quotes if the
path contains spaces.

Backup the mail with my Genie Outlook Express Email Backup Program. Then delete all mail files from c:\D&C\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\8332D….\Microsoft \Outlook Express

Then restore the email with the sync process in the Genie Outlook. Chances are one of the folders - like inbox, will break it again, so leave out the one that breaks it.

In my case it was inbox.dbx. You can just delete that file and loose your mail and that fixes it too.

Favorites gone after an IE reset - Windows 7

* * * * I GOT THEM BACK * * * *  Originally, I had to fix a corrupt IE9, and chose to 'Reset' it under the 'Advanced' tab.  Using a technet article, mind you... now my favorites were missing.  After 7 'System Restores' and 'Undos', some UniBlue PowerSuite registry restores and with all the success of nothing...  I went to the C:\Users\<UserName>\Favorites folder, I RIGHT-CLICKED ON IT -> and chose 'Restore Previous Versions', next a dialog screen loaded, and it showed, with a list of Folder versions and dates.  At this point, you can click on a corresponding date, and then cick 'Open'.  To my shock and surprise, they were there, I tried 'Restore' which didn't seem to work.  So I clicked on the most recent date that had them all, and 'Selected All' Ctrl-A, and right clicked and chose 'Copy'.  Then went into the Favorites folder and chose 'Paste'.  Now they're all back.  If I left anything out, I'm sure you'll get it, that's the jist of it.  I used to work at Microsoft in Irving for Messaging, but they didn't need me I guess.  Maybe because my bosses nickname was the T1000.

HYPERLINK "http://www.bigresource.com/VB-Marking-your-exe-for-Request-to-Run-as-Administrator-in-Vista-DVlG7mRhCL.html"Marking Your Exe For Request To Run As Administrator In Vista
I have been all over the Internet and there is nothing that explicitly tells you how to mark your file to "Run As Administrator". Everyone uses the buzz words but no one states exactly how to do it, Especially for VB exe's.

I will give you a quick lesson on how it can be done with a little work. Since VB handles resource information differently than other languages such a C++ you can forget about using VB's resource editor on the exe. In my procedure you will need the help of a the program "Resource Hacker" by Angus Johnson http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

The procedure is as follows:

1 - Open the exe in the Resource Hacker
2 - Go to Action->Add a New Resource
3 - Select any text file. it really doesn't matter for you are going to delete the information anyway. So choose a small one...
4 - Use the following entries to fill in the New Resource box

Resource Type - 24
Resource Name - 1
Resource Language - 3081

4 - Select your new resource from the list and Replace whatever is in the language (3081) with a copy the XML script (Below) then compile the script and save back to the original exe. That's It!!!. Your exe is now marked to request to run as administrator on Vista. You will know this worked by the shield that Vista places on your applications icons.

Don't forget to change the marker EXENAME in the XML script to the same name as the exe you are marking or it won't work!!!

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0">
<assemblyIdentity version="1.0.0.0"
processorArchitecture="X86"
name="EXENAME"
type="win32"/>

When opening Word 2007 (directly or by clicking on an existing document), a
box pops up that says the following:

File conversion ~$N9Cwyw

Select the encoding that makes your document readable.
Text encoding

Windows is selected because it's the default option. There are a bunch of
strange characters in this dialogue box.

Upon closing it, another one, albeit much smaller pops up that says:

HYPERLINK "http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/problem-opening-word-2007-a-t3562949.html#"Microsoft Office Word
The add-in template is not valid.

It sounds like a temp file has gotten stranded in your startup folder.
Navigate to that folder and delete the file that's named ~$N9Cwyw.dat.

If you don't know the startup location, you can discover it in Word. Click
Word Options (at the bottom of the window you see when you click the Office
button--upper left corner of Word). There, click the Advanced tab, File
locations (near the bottom of the Advanced settings window), and see where
Startup is located.

Then, close Word, delete the ~$N9Cwyw.dat file, and any other stray files
you see whose names begin with ~, then try opening Word again.

Uninstall TrendMicro Officescan Without a Password

To remove / reset the uninstall password for Trend Micro OfficeScan
Edit Ofcscan.ini file. (Do a search.)
On Windows.95/98/XP machines it is usually in C:\Windows\Ofcscan.ini
On Windows.NT/2K machines it is usually in C:\WINNT\Ofcscan.ini
Open the Ofcscan.ini file using notepad search for the [INI_CLIENT_SECTION]
Find the line reading Uninstall_Pwd= and type a # at the beginning of the line to comment it out.
Insert a new line saying Uninstall_Pwd=70
Save the Ofcscan.ini file and retry the uninstall. When it prompts you for a password, enter a ’1′.
Sadly though, this method did not work for me as there was no Ofcscan.ini file to be found anywhere on these workstations.  Therefore I was forced to do some manual removal of the client.  This took a little digging into the HYPERLINK "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986"Registry.  Here are the steps I went through that worked for me:
OfficeScanNT Listener
OfficeScanNT RealTimeScan
OfficeScanNT Personal Firewall (this one may not be enabled – don’t worry if you don’t see it)
Go to Control Panel —> Administrative Tools —-> Services — and stop these services:
Run Registry Editor. Click Start —> Run —> then type ‘regedit.exe’
Find this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
Ntrtscan
Tmlisten
TmFilter
VSApiNt
TMPreFilter
TM_CFW
OfcPfwSvc
Delete these keys:
Now find this Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\TrendMicro
OfcWatchDog
Pc-cillinNTCorp
RemoteAgent
PC-cillin
Delete the following keys:
Next Find this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Delete the OfficeScanNT Monitor key.
Now find the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Delete the OfficeScanNT key.
Delete the OfficeScan program group (Trend Micro OfficeScan Client) from the Windows Start menu.
Restart your computer.
Delete the directories that contain the OfficeScan Client program files, normally located inside Program Files folder.
First, you need to stop all the Officescan Services. To do that
The above steps worked for me on a version 6 client of the Trend Micro Officescan client. If you are trying to remove an early version of the client, these Registry keys and services may not be the same.  Please use the above instructions carefully and at your own risk.  Also, remember anytime you intend to edit the Registry make a backup BEFORE you started editing and/or deleting keys.

Click Start
, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
In the right pane, if you have UpperFilters, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
In the right pane, if you have LowerFilters, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
Note After you remove the UpperFilters registry entry and the LowerFilters registry entry, you may lose functionality in certain programs such as CD recording programs. In this scenario, you must reinstall any affected programs. If the problem recurs, contact the program vendor to determine whether an update is available for the program.

XP Activation Time Expired - Cannot Logon

In this example: Your activation period has expired, (past 30 days) and you need to get to Normal mode again.

1. Turn On your PC

2. Press F8 repeatedly and go to Safe Mode

3. Logon as per normal
(note: Administrator password is usually blank, but hopefully you know your password)

4. Allow the Desktop to fully load (answering "Yes" to continue into Safe Mode)
(note: This is just a long way of saying go to Safe Mode)

5. Click on Start - Run

6. Type in exactly: rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk (and click OK)
(note: one space, after "rundll32.exe " also the Oo are two letter o's in "oobe"; capitals and comma are important)

7. Wait a couple of seconds (although you will Not see any change)

8. Restart your PC normally (Start - Shutdown - Restart - Ok)

9. You are now able to go to Normal Mode again (For another 30 days !!!)

10. Do whatever you like, you're back to Normal.

This fixed it for me but took me a long time to find this and get it going, hopefully it works for you to.

System Restore XP From Boot CD

For MS's solution, see "How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting" <HYPERLINK "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545%3E"http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545>

If reading all that is too boring, here's the Cliff's Notes version:

· Use your UBCD (Bart PE, Mini PE, etc.) to boot the system.
· Create a Temporary Folder.
· Using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\System Volume Information, and then into its _restore{...} subfolder. There you'll see all (if there are any) available "restore points." The Date Modified column will provide the approximate date/time the "restore point" was created.
· Click into the folder of a "restore point" you're reasonably sure was created before the problem began. Click into its Snapshot subfolder.
· Copy the _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM, _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY, _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE, _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM, and _REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT files to your Temporary Folder.
· Rename the copied files in your Temporary Folder to SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, SYSTEM, and DEFAULT. When that's done, select and copy the five files.
· Navigate to the folder C:\Windows\System32\Config
· Rename the following files: SAM to SAM.back, SECURITY to SECURITY.BAK, SOFTWARE to SOFTWARE.BAK, SYSTEM to SYSTEM.BAK, and DEFAULT to DEFAULT.BAK
· Now, paste the five files previously copied from the Temporary folder into the C:\Windows\System32\Config folder.
· Eject your boot CD. Power off the system. Wait a beat, and power on.

Your Windows Registry has been rolled back.
